Money and Mental Health welcomes government plans for Neighbourhood Health Services

2 July 2025

The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute — the charity founded and chaired by Martin Lewis (MoneySavingExpert) — has welcomed government plans to integrate mental health treatment and debt advice in the new Neighbourhood Health Services, announced as part of the 10 Year Health Plan launched today.

The Neighbourhood Health Services will bring together mental health, diagnostics and other health treatment, and will also offer services like debt advice and employment support under the same roof. These health centres will be open 12 hours a day, six days a week within local communities.

Money and Mental Health has long campaigned for debt advice to be integrated into mental health services. The charity’s research shows that providing debt advice alongside mental health support could double recovery rates for people struggling with debt and depression, and help an extra 27,000 people recover from mental health problems each year.

Responding to the government’s announcement, Helen Undy, Chief Executive of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, said:

“Making mental health and debt support available under the same roof and at times that fit with people’s lives could be transformative, and we strongly welcome these plans.

“Money problems are a key cause of poor mental health, and they also make it much harder for people to recover and move on with their lives. We’ve long called for debt advice to be integrated into mental health services, because our research shows it could make a huge difference in boosting recovery rates, which in turn would ease the pressure on the NHS.

“We’re delighted the government has listened and put this idea at the heart of its plans for Neighbourhood Health Services. If delivered well, this could be a gamechanger in breaking the cycle of money and mental health problems that millions of people are experiencing.”
